Tom Seidmann-Freud

I love these strange, childish illustrations by Tom Seidmann-Freud, niece of Sigmund Freud and an eccentric artist and book author who took her own life. Having just watched "Dangerous Method" (3.75 out of 5 stars), this seems a little more relevant.

Tests for Viral Pet Video 1

I have just begun testing for a viral pet video with Mei as the subject.

Right now, I'm just seeing what she can endure. I started off with a simple wooden spoon. She teased me with a little initial interest and then proceeded to walk away. Next steps are other every day household objects. We will then graduate to fruits and perhaps other cooked human food.

Stay tuned.

A delightful child magic calendar from HNWerkmann. Via Atelier pour enfants.

• In shop matters: There are only 4 calendars left! In a way I am sad to think there will soon be no more of these. What will I do next to fill the void? Hmm..

• I will be doing my last mail run on the 20th of December for the holidays. You may still place orders through the new site but I will not be doing my next mailing until after the New Year. Please take note and get your orders in!

• I hope everyone is enjoying amazing holiday feelings!

The Indestructible Beat of Soweto

Every time DH & I wander into a record store, I make a bee-line to the World/African section. Here is a recent acquisition from our last trip to a record store. The pickings were kind of slim in this area but I came upon this album and was interested. I had never heard anything from Soweto before but the cover was nice and the price was right.

We brought it home, listened to it and were SUPER PLEASED ! The pleasant stylingz of African beats and guitars and strong vocals singing about nice subject matters. For instance, there is a song about the perils of drinking. Another about the importance of education.

And another called "Wakwami: My wife, my love"

I beg you my love, lets talk it over
Because our continuous misunderstandings won't help us
They (the kids) are still small
We must bring them up correctly.

I like this guy!

This weekend: Fenn Fair

I will be selling this Friday through Sunday at Fenn Fair this weekend! Come see me!

Mr. Carlos

My brother's name is Dante Carlos. He is based in Minneapolis and is a senior designer at the Walker Art Center. He is one of those people who is so good at what they do, its sick. I'm not just saying this because I'm his sister. His work is fun, imaginative, irreverent and just really really fresh.

We founded Revol Magazine, an old internet art magazine from several years ago. He was my collaborator on our 2012 Calendar project and I also hired him to do some new identity work.

Check out all this beauty:

I am also happy to say he now has a website where you can see all his work!

Follow his visual blog, his website and check out his flickr!

Other options include: write him a nice note, send him some pizza, treat him to a 20 piece chicken mcnuggets meal and/or just think good thoughts about him.

I can't stop making these things! Sourcing beads has become quite an addiction. Making jewelry is my happy place. Don't judge me :(

These new ladyfriends will be up in the store very soon. The hardest part is finding a name for them. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Enjoy the rest of the weekend, my friends.

Lets have a black celebration

I used to be a huge depeche mode fan. I still like them a lot but I used to be super into them back in high school. I was a member of their fan club, I would seek out as many bootlegs of rare songs and live sets I could find. I was the co-founder of the only (and very short lived) depeche mode fanclub in Manila where we would put out the occasional newsletter and send it to members via mail or fax.

I had a number of depeche mode penpals from Germany and for some reason they were all from East Germany. There was one guy who would always sign off his letters with "Let's have a black correspondence" which was, and still is, THE BEST!

Anyway, in honor of black friday (and small business saturday and cyber monday etc), lets have a black celebration!

From today through Monday, 25% off all prints and posters in the shop (or you can order $37 worth of other stuff and get the discount)!

Use Code: darkfriday or click here to redeem.

I love the holidays. I love you guys.

Food & Wine + Debbie Carlos sitting in a tree

So excited to have the Perfect Twist poster (as well as Devin's thermal undies and winter socks) featured in the December issue of Food and Wine Magazine !

I totally love looking at STUFF and especially stuff you can buy or dream of buying so I'm always interested in everyone's gift lists and etsy treasuries and the like. They've got some really nice goodies in this one.

& as a fan of top chef, I can't help but imagine that Gail Simmons and maybe even Padma have now seen my work. And whoever else reads food and wine which is probably everyone. Ruth Reichl? James Oseland? Etc? Eek!

Now if they would just hire me to shoot some of their editorials. Hit me up on my cell!

Haaaaappy Moooonday !

Thank you!

Many thanks to those who have ordered AHC necklaces this past week and since I started. Starting a jewelry line was a huge risk for me in terms of how people might react to my doing something really different, how I would resolve working in two different spheres, how good I would actually be at this. But seeing that people like the new stuff really makes me feel good and validated. There is a ton I still have to learn and I feel like in many ways I'm still trying to figure out what exactly I'm doing but I'm glad that I feel like maybe this is the right direction.

So thank you thank you thank you!

I also wanted to say that I will be updating the shop very soon with some new goodies.

And and and - - - don't forget to enter the giveaway over on Where the Lovely Things Are! It ends Monday!

A darker mood

Lets start the week off right -- with two new large posters ! A darker mood for the darker and colder season (in the northern hemisphere anyway). The first is the feathery back of a snowy owl and the second is the sideways glance of a great horned owl. Great alone but I really like how they look together. Both available only in the new shop !

Dose Market !

This Sunday I am so excited to be selling my things at Dose Market. Dose is a new phenomenon here in Chicago -- a higher end food and fashion market at the River East Art Center that is gaining a ton of attention.

If you are a food enthusiast like me (I refuse to say f - o - o - d - i - e ), you will just die. Zingerman's is going to be there! Great Lake ! Doughnut Vault ! Also a ton of awesome designers who make the most beautiful things to put on your body and in your home.

And I will be selling my posters, postcards and calendars there.

This special market has also been written up by the New York Times. YES

You should go ! More info on their site here !

I haven't painted my nails in years! I was at a target recently and saw some nice colors and thought I'd give it a try. I thought I would go with this restrained yet funky ztyle. I forgot how much I like the smell of polish.

I wanted to show you some of the art we have in our apartment that we have been collecting from our friends and artists we admire. I feel like my tastes change constantly but the things we have chosen to put up are ones that have endured and I feel good about our little curated collection.

Here we go!

My brother, Dante, the one who introduced me to the plotter poster format, made this poster a few years ago while he was still in school. Coolness factor A ++.

I love folk art above all other forms. Especially Inuit art. This little piece was gifted to me by my brother and it hangs next to our front door to greet guests when they arrive and its something nice for me to stare at as I answer our intercom.

Edward Curtis is one of my favorite photographers of all time. This print probably borders on the illegial/unethical but also probably is OK. I totally scanned this image from a book borrowed from a friend and made an 18x24 poster out of it. I loved this image and wanted to put up a portrait of a woman. I'm sorry Estate of Edward Curtis.

On the other side of the window, I hung this amazing bear portrait by super talented photographer and good friend Todd Baxter. If you have not seen his Owl Scouts series, you need to click over and look. Amazing stuff.

This piece is by William Edmonds and was acquired through a trade. This piece was such a good score. I couldn't believe how nice William is and he sent the original too. We love it so much.

Another traded piece. This one is by artist / illustrator Nathaniel Russell. I had such a hard time choosing which piece I wanted in our trade that he let me choose two. Niceness!! I love the mood/feeling/sense of humor in his work.

This print is by Adam James Boon, a photographer based out of England. I love his body of work. Making small things monumental & even sublime. This scan of dust looks like the universe. I love how it is cropped in a circle, surrounded in delicate pink.

I made this one. I see my own images so much I get sick of them sometimes but I really loved how these two pieces turned out and I love how they look together. Also I thought it was appropriate to go over our couch. Two birds!

My husband, Devin Higgins, is a great photographer as well. This big photo is one of his images. It looks great above our bed. Those leaves are luminous!

Barsha Dahal is one of my oldest friends. We've known each other since 8th grade homeroom. She is a beautiful person and a wonderful artist and illustrator. This is a print of a painting she did. So great!

This painting was gifted to us by my mom as a wedding present (I think?). She painted it! I have a lot of fond memories of her painting at our dining room table while I was growing up. I loved seeing all her paints and supplies and papers.

Jacinta Moore has been a favorite of mine for so many years now. Ever since we friended each other on Livejournal. I have had this print of hers for a long time and has constistently been on display in the various apartments we have been in through the years.

Our second piece by Nathaniel Russell. This hangs across from our bed. This guitarsman lulls us to sleep every night.
